Hair Transplant For Men

It’s normal to be concerned about hair loss, seeing as two out of three men will deal with it by their mid-30s. Many men rock a bald head or buzz cut, but others are uncomfortable with the drastic change in appearance. If you’re seeking alternative solutions to help you maintain a strong sense of identity, consider a hair transplant procedure.

Concerned about the risks, costs, and procedure? Hair transplantation has come a long way from its 1950s roots. In its primitive stages, surgeons removed a small portion of the scalp and transplanted it to balding patches. In the mid-1990s, a progressive technique called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) rapidly became the norm. Presently, 90% of surgeons use FUT for hair loss. Learn about hair transplants to see if the procedure is right for you.

When medications and lifestyle changes don’t help, many men research hair transplantation. Unlike other treatment options, a hair transplant is a more intensive surgical procedure. During the transplantation, the surgeon replaces patches of thinning or balding hair with clusters of healthy hair follicles. The replacement is discreet, and the final result is consistent with your natural hair.

In 2016, there were roughly 600,000 hair restoration surgeries worldwide, according to data from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. The number of procedures increases every year, but how does it work?

There are two procedures for hair transplantation, Follicular Unit Transplantation and Follicular Unit Extraction.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Also called “strip surgery,” this procedure involves removing a small strip of follicles from the back of the scalp. This area is particularly immune to genetic hair loss and serves as the donor tissue. The tissue is harvested and divided into tiny hair grafts, each one containing a few hair strands. The grafts are then planted across the scalp in clusters to areas of thinning and balding. After the procedure, the hair donor follicles grow to emulate the natural appearance of healthy, thicker hair across the scalp. FUT leaves behind a small, linear scar from the scalp tissue removal. As your new hair grows in, they will conceal the scar.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular Unit Extraction is similar to Follicular Unit Transplantation. However, there is one distinguishable factor: instead of extracting a piece of scalp tissue, surgeons excise hair follicle units directly from the scalp. FUE will leave behind minuscule scars that are much less noticeable than the FUT scar. FUE is also less painful and invasive of a procedure.

Each procedure may require multiple sessions, depending on how much hair must be transplanted. On average, surgeons transplant between 1,000 to 2,000 hair follicles, and each session takes a few hours.

After your surgery, it may take about 3-4 months to see results. On average, patients notice a 60% hair growth around the 9-month post-surgery mark. However, some patients only experience 10% growth while others experience 80%. During your initial consultation with the surgeon, ask questions about your hair's chance of success, to evaluate if the procedure is right for you.

Hair transplant surgery is not right for everyone. First, you should consider the type of hair loss you are experiencing. Do you have readily available hair at the back of the scalp? If so, your surgeon will have plenty of follicles to use as donors. If your hair is very thin, it may be difficult to transplant donor follicles.

It’s also important to consider your lifestyle, medical history, health, and budget. If you are unsure if the male hair transplant is right for you, consult with your healthcare team to get guidance for your best options. Additionally, you can schedule a consultation with a hair restoration surgeon in your area. During your visit, the surgeon will analyze your scalp, type of hair loss, and determine if you are a candidate.

Deciding to get a hair transplant procedure is a significant decision. While you weigh your options, consider using cosmetic hair care solutions in the interim.
